What next after Grade 10 th and why it important to plan and apply now?

As a parent, one of the most difficult decisions they need to make is what career path will my child take after Grade 10? Initially, there were only a handful of professions like doctor, engineer, finance, and teacher, etc. hence the decision was only between three streams i.e. Science/ Arts and Commerce but now there are more than 15000 professions that exist in India, as compared to a decade ago. Hence, it is understandable for parents to feel confused and worried and there are a lot of questions in a parent's mind like:

  • Should our child go for the standard science stream?
  • Should our child go for commerce?
  • Or Should our child take up the non-conventional arts stream?
  • Once on the above question we receive some clarity the next question would be which board/college/high school the child take admission for?

And many more….

A few students are clear about what they want in their life. But there are a lot of students who are confused about their career path. Hence, Class 11th is considered to be a very important and confusing crossroad of your career.

So how do we decide upon the stream for the child? The decision should be basis on the child's interests, abilities, and needs. Also, it is important to keep in mind that each child is unique and has different skill sets.

How do you find out which stream in Class 11th the child is interested in? It can be decided by going to a career counselling. Most of the international schools in Mumbai like Aditya Birla World Academy have an in-house counsellor who helps the child with their career goals starting from Grade 8 itself and helps them make an informed career choice.

Find below the mistakes you should avoid while making an informed career choice for your child for Class 11th:

Parental/Societal pressure Taking a stream as they are more respected in the society is not the right way to make an informed career choice. There are a lot of offbeat careers that are doing well

Lack of knowledge There are too many career options available after Class 10 and with the help of proper career guidance and counselling, you will get more clarity and get information on the career options.

Following the crowd One of the most common mistakes that most of the students unknowingly make is following the crowd. A lot of times, students just take up a stream only because their friends have decided to take that stream. This could turn out to be the worst decision of their lives.

It is important that you chose the stream which the student is passionate about rather than doing what most of the students are doing. Once you have decided which stream the child wants to take Science/ Arts/ Commerce. The next important question would be which education boar: Should you go CBSE or ICSE or IB or A Level?

Choosing between IB, A Level, CBSE or ISC is not an easy option. Every education board has its own pro and cons.
